Lithium Triborate (LiB3O5 or LBO) is an attractive nonlinear optical crystal with combination of number of the following unique features: wide transparency region (from 150nm in UV to 2.6μm in IR) and Type I and Type II NCPM range (0.95~1.8μm), high damage threshold (>10GW/cm2 for 1.064μm, 20ns, 50Hz), high effective non-linear coefficient, very small walk-off angle and wide acceptance angle, excellent optical homogeneity (Dn~10-6/cm). On the base of above perfect properties, LBO is a very useful nonlinear optical material, especially for SHG of high-intensity laser radiation, intracavity SHG, deep-UV SFG and OPO applications. Typical applications are listed as follows:

| i) Frequency Generation - Fundamental wavelengths of phase matching cut off at 554nm for SHG, at 794nm for THG, down to about 165nm for SFM, so we can get SHG of high peak power pulsed laser: Nd doped, Ti:Sapphire (650-1100nm), Alexandrite (720-800nm), Dye lasers and Copper-vapor (578nm); and THG of Nd doped, Ti:Sapphire, Alexandrite lasers; |
| ii) Optical parametric oscillators (OPO) - Tunable solid-state lasers using UV (308, 355 nm), visible or IR (1064 nm) as the pump in OPO process of both Type I and Type II phase-matching; |
| iii) Non-critical phase-matching (NCPM) for conversion of CW and quasi-CW radiation: Temperature-controllable (around 150°C for SHG of 1064nm) NCPM (walk-off is null) for nominal 1.0-1.3μm, Type I SHG; Room temperature, quasi-NCPM (angle tune while maintaining q=90°) for Type II SHG (0.8-1.1μm) and THG (0.95-1.2μm), a unique capability attributable to its biaxiality partly. |
